Which English test should I take for my Australian visa?
IELTS Academic is accepted for all visa types and is the most commonly used. PTE Academic is growing in popularity. Results arrive faster (often 5 business days). OET is the preferred choice for healthcare professionals as it's also accepted by AHPRA for registration. The guide covers all four tests in detail.
Do I need IELTS Academic or IELTS General for visa purposes?
IELTS Academic is required for most skilled migration and student visas. IELTS General Training is accepted for some work visas (e.g. 482) and family visas. Always confirm with your migration agent which version applies to your situation.
How long are IELTS results valid for a visa application?
IELTS test results are valid for 3 years from the test date for Australian visa purposes. PTE Academic results are also valid for 3 years. Plan your exam date accordingly so your results don't expire before your visa is granted.
What is Competent English and why does it matter?
Competent English (IELTS 6.0 in every band; PTE 50 in every band) is the minimum English level for most skilled migration visas including 189, 190, 186 and 485. If your score is below this, your visa application will not be approved. See the guide for the full breakdown.
Can I get extra migration points by scoring higher in English?
Yes, for points-tested visas (189, 190, 491), achieving Proficient English (IELTS 7.0 each band) earns +10 points and Superior English (IELTS 8.0 each band) earns +20 points toward your Expression of Interest (EOI). These points can make the critical difference in competitive occupation categories.
